Refurbishing of our triple room is almost complete and will soon be back in action.

The two major events of 2012 are the Queens diamond jubilee and the London Olympics.

This is the second royal diamond jubilee in the UK, the first being that of Queen Victoria in 1897. It is interesting that Harbour lodge, a private residence called "Dromore" at the time was a relative new build during those celebrations. It makes us think about all the events,and technology advances this old building has witnessed over it's lifetime.

The London Olympics will have little impact upon Paignton where life will carry on pretty much as usual with the TV being the main source of participation for those who want to watch the events. Unlike the areas around London and Weymouth we certainly won't be raising our prices in expectation of the increased demand for accommodation.

Flying Boats Over Paignton Harbour?

Not exactly, last Monday was the day when the boats were lifted back into the harbour from their winter quarters on the quayside.

One of the indicators that Easter and summer are just around the corner. All around Paignton, businesses have been using the recent spell of good weather to put the final touches to all their winter refurbishments ready to welcome our guests.

Along with the spring flowers things are looking pretty good at the moment.

And now the clocks have gone forward an hour and the evenings are lighter it is great to take an evening stroll along the seafront.

And the ducks? They were just minding their own business swimming round the harbour.

**** We are not the only ones to be happy with all of our improvements. Following an overnight visit from the hotel inspector Harbour Lodge has now a achieved 4 Star rating. ****.

With the hall and stairs now re-painted and carpeted we are now open for guests again. We have also completely re-furbished two ensuites and replaced carpets and furniture in three of the rooms.

We are very pleased with the improvements and are sure that they will add to our guests comfort.

Since the new year we have been carrying out some fairly major refurbishments of some of our en-suites and the hall. Beacuase of the upheaval we took the decision to close until completion but will be able to accept guests from March 1st. Meanwhile we are still taking bookings for later in the year.

Paignton TIC closure due to cuts!

From the begining of October the Paignton Tourist Information Centre will be closed for the winter.

But at Harbour Lodge we will continue to supply all the information you need to enjoy your stay in the area. As well as information on local attractions we will continue to provide details of alternative travel, bus timetables, theatres, restuarants and of course our local expert knowledge will be available.

There is still plenty to do and see in the area throughout the winter months. With our unique milder "miro-climate" the winter months are an ideal time to take a coastal walk with stunning views or just take a relaxing break.

Deal or No Deal?

Whilst you all are enjoying this years short break or holiday we have reached the time when we have to put into place some of our advertising for next year, which means setting next years prices. This year it's a more difficult task than usual as we have to try and assess the impact of the rise in VAT on the business.

Another decision is how we promote our prices. This year we have tried to keep things simple, a one night stay will cost £62.00, more than one will cost £56.00 per night and 7 nights+ £54.00/night. for a double room.

However, would it appear a better bargain if we only quoted the higher price and offered a 10% discount for longer stays? or if we offered "stay 6 nights and get one free"?

We would not expect to get many guests if we set our tariff at £112 per night but we might then attract people with a 50% discount.

To take a pound or two off the rates we could spend ages deciding what to cut from our service, hoping that the guests won't notice. perhaps less choice on the beverage tray, one packet of biscuits instead of two per room. Less choice at breakfast for example.

We could set a lower rate then add "supplements" and "charges".

There are so many ways we could appear to offer good "deals" and "bargains" but we believe life's too short to bother with all that so we will just quote our prices in plain simple terms and the price you see is the price you pay.

June Already

Half way through 2010 already, May was another busy month here in Paignton. Sunshine, bustling beaches, blue skies and sea we could be forgiven thinking we were around the Mediterranean, well we are on "The English Riviera".

June and July is a great time to visit the area for a relaxing break and already our booking diary is beginning to fill so book early to avoid disappointment.

No Volcanic Eruptions in Paignton

Just to let everyone know that Icelands in Paignton has not erupted and there is not a cloud of fine particles of frozen ready meals over the area.

There is the odd bit of ash fallout from the steam train but there is no danger of it clogging up the engines of the buses and ferries.

In fact, for the past week or so, here in Paignton we have enjoyed clear blue skies with not a cloud , or vapour trail, in sight and it looks like continuing that way well into the weekend!

The Stress Of The Holiday Abroad!

Well here we are 2010 is upon us, the adverts on the telly encouraging us to rush out and buy new sofas, kitchens, furniture, Easter eggs and of course holidays.

You can choose winter sun, summer sun, bargain packages, late deals and much more to entice you to book your relaxing break in the sun but they don't tell you about the stressful time you'll have getting there and back.

No sooner have you confirmed your booking when you find your holiday at a cheaper price. You watch the Euro exchange rates daily just in case there is a dramatic change and you can get a few more to spend because you know that everything is going to be so expensive when you get there.

Nearer the time you start your packing, what can or can't you put in hand luggage? Then there's the balancing act with your suitcase on the bathroom scales to see if it meets the "baggage allowance".

Flying to your holiday destination used to be an enjoyable part of the vacation now you have to arrive many hours earlier than the flight, often before daybreak. You join the queue to check-in that slowly shuffles forward, bleary eyed you answer "yes", "no", "no" to the inevitable questions about packing your bag yourself, did anyone tamper with it or give you anything to carry.

Clutching your boarding pass you join the next queue for security, More humiliation as you empty your pockets, remove clothing and you just know that the arch is going to bleep when you go through it. Now we are promised extra security which will mean even more hassle to look forward to.

Into the departure lounge where you look at the information screens in dread of seeing the word "delayed" next to your flight.
You wander round the shop, drink an expensive coffee then just as terminal boredom sets in it is time for boarding and you have to proceed to a departure gate where crowded in with your fellow passengers ........................nothing happens.
In one corner some people in yellow jackets ignore you and pretend to look busy, it takes them ages to decide who is going to make the distorted announcement about boarding and seat numbers.

Finally you board the plane and it takes off , you can relax, apart from the safety demonstration and the constant sales pitches of the cabin crew. But it is all worth it because a few hours later the plane starts it's descent and you get your first glimpse of sunshine. Only the baggage reclaim and the journey to your accommodation to go, that's after you have been crammed on a bus for 10 minutes and driven miles round the airport to "arrivals" which is about 100 yards from the airplane and you could have walked to in about 30 seconds.

Seven or eight hours after you left home you have completed your 2-3 hour flight, arrived at your destination and ready to enjoy your holiday. It'll be days before you have to do it all again to get home.

You'll need a holiday to recover.

Autumn is still a good time to come and visit Paignton. Sheltered by Dartmoor Torbay has a milder climate which means that even in winter we get some very pleasant warm days. Ideal for strolling along the beach or walking the coast path. There are also plenty of other things to do. Just maybe this year we will get that "Indian summer" that we deserve, keep an eye on the weather forecast for the area.

You can make a decent cup of tea by sticking the tea-bag in the mug (indeed, many people never make tea any other way!) so why incur the cost of a teapot? Most of our hotels have vending machines, so if you're feeling peckish purchase your snacks from one of these..

Harbourlodge: We believe in choice so provide you with a teapot if you wish to use it, along with several varieties of tea, coffee, biscuits and hot chocolate. We will even provide fresh milk on request-no extra charge.

Toiletries:

Travelodge: Most people staying away from home will pack a toiletry bag, so don't need miniature bottles of synthetic-smelling lotions and potions. But if you have forgotten something, we sell a range of basic toiletries from vending machines in every hotel.

Harbour Lodge: Again it comes down to choice, sure many people will use their own shampoo and shower gel but we provide them just in case. It would not be very convenient, having prepared for a shower to discover that you have forgotten your toiletries and have to prowl a hotel corridor looking for a vending machine

Towels:

Travelodge: Every room is given two towels except for single rooms where there is one. We believe this will meet our customer's needs but you are welcome to take any additional towels from reception if you wish.
People slipping on bath mats is the cause of the thousands of accidents every year.

Harbour Lodge: We provide a bath towel and a hand towel per guest and also a bathmat.

Other Extras

Travelodge: Wi-Fi access available at a charge.

Harbour Lodge: Wi-Fi included free (on request) .

Special Offers, Bargains, Deals and Budget

Cheap, bargain, budget, special offer. There seem to be an endless number of phrases from all sorts of businesses trying to convince us that their prices are cheaper than all the rest. There are “deals” galore and you can “beat the credit crunch” but one key phrase that seems to be missing is “value for money”.

We must have all experienced buying the cheap tyres, but when we get the bill find that balancing, valves, disposal and of course VAT have been added. Then there’s the bargain flight that is only a bargain until taxes, fuel surcharges, baggage etc. are all added.

There is also the “Budget Hotel” where they make a deal of not providing all the extras they claim add to other hotel rates and you don’t need. But of course “extras” like breakfast and often parking, have to be paid for somewhere by the guest.

Genuine bargains don’t tend to last long, if a trader in any field reduces their prices to a level where their costs are not covered they soon go out of business. We have seen the demise of Retail, Holiday companies, airlines and many others recently.

At Harbour Lodge we have set a tariff that, we believe, provides value for money for the guest and a sustainable business income.

We will not go down the route of reducing our quality and service levels. eg. fewer items on the beverage tray, smaller breakfast portions or cutting corners on the cleaning in order to take a pound or two off the rates.
We will not artificially increase our prices so that we can “reduce” them again to appear to offer bargain breaks or special offers.
The price agreed at booking is the price you will pay, fully inclusive, there will be no extra surprises when you get the bill.
We do not use third party online booking agents as they may include extra hidden commission charges payable by the guest.

Our aim is to provide “Value for Money” "Quality" bed and breakfast accommodation both now and in the foreseeable future.

Paignton in June

June and early July is one of the best times of the year to visit Paignton. Less crowded than July and August there is still plenty to do.
Following it's closure and uncertain future last year it is good to hear that Quaywest water park is re-opening under new owners.
Around the bay there is the annual trawler race from Brixham and the popular Babbacombe festival on Babbacombe downs.
At Torre Abbey there is the intriguing "Field for the British Isles" exhibition by the artist Antony Gormley, better known for the Angel of the North sculpture.
Described as a startling and arresting sight: thousands of unglazed, fired, small clay figures, standing closely together, all staring towards the viewer. The Field for the British Isles' comprising 40,000 clay figures will fill much of the Abbey's huge Spanish Barn and will be open to the public free of charge from 27th June to 23rd August 2009.

Paignton Bike nights are now in full swing every Wednesday and for the young at heart there is a Thomas the Tank engine weekend on the steam Railway on the 27th and 28th June.

Of course there are always the beach or the stunning coastal walks to enjoy.

Another Great Weekend in Paignton

There was a really great atmosphere in Paignton last weekend as the 5th annual BMAD Bike Festival took place. Thousands of motorbikes of all shapes and sizes lined the promenade and there was some superb entertainment and live music.

It was fantastic to see families and people of all ages mingling with the bikers and enjoying the event. Even those not into motorbikes could not help getting caught up in the atmosphere and of course the good weather helped.

BMAD (Bikers make a difference) was formed to raise money for local charities one of which the air ambulance made a visit to the show. It is organised by volunteers and last year donated over £30,000 to charities.

Doesn't time fly? May is nearly upon us all ready.

It was great to be busy over Easter despite the worst efforts of the weathermen who were predicting wind, rain and general gloom and doom but in the event here in Paignton we enjoyed wall to wall sunshine and some guests even complained of mild sunburn. We think that they need some paignton seaweed to help them get it more accurate.

The early May bank holiday sees the annual BMAD Bike Festival where thousands of pounds are raised for charity. Although a "biker" event this is always a great show with live music, arena events and a really good atmosphere. The Summer Starts Here

It is always a good sign that summer is on it's way when the annual boat lift into the harbour takes place.

All the boats that have been overwintered on the harbourside were lifted back into the water today. The ferry services, cruises and fishing trips will soon commence once more.

Along Paignton seafront the kiosks are back in place and ready for the season and in Goodrington and Preston the beach huts have been returned from their winter storage.

In some parts of the country the sound of the first "cuckoo" heralds spring In Paignton we listen out for the distant "hoot hoot, chuff chuff" of the steam railway which started it's services to Kingswear last weekend.

The gardens and parks look really colourful at the moment and with warm weather predicted we are looking forward to Easter next week.

Spring Gardens

The recent spell of warm sunshine has really brought on the spring flowers. The parks and gardens are awash with colour.

This is an ideal time of the year to visit the gardens around the area. The National Trust garden at Coleton Fishacre for example where the woodland garden is planted with masses of azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, which cascade down a valley towards the sea. The microclimate allows many tender species to flourish.

There is also Compton Castle and of course Greenway with stunning views over the river Dart. After a major re-furbishment Greenway House, the holiday home of Agatha Christie, is now open to the pubic for the first time this year.

Because access and parking is limited anyone wishing to arrive by car will have to pre-book a parking space. However there are a number of "green ways" to get there including ferries, bus or a pleasant 2.5 mile walk from Broadsands. Those arriving by green methods will be guaranteed a tour of the house. Well here we are well into January 2009. We are currently closed as we are refurbishing our dining room, we will be open for business again on Thursday 22nd January.

There are many events planned or the Bay this coming year. As well as the traditional ones there are new ones like the crime writers festival and a green festival. More details will be available soon.

Meanwhile many of the attractions are open so it is a good time to enjoy a short break here in Paignton.

The theme for October, is of course, Halloween at the Model Village, Kents Cavern, the steam railway and at Occombe farm and Berry Head.
There's an apple day and craft fair at Cockington and autumn is an ideal time of the year for walking the coast path.
Torre Abbey is now open after its' major refurbishment and there are many events happening there.

New Seafront Illuminations

At long last the new lights on the Esplanade have been switched on and the seafront is illuminated again.

They are energy saving LED lights and are powered by solar energy.

As it says on the English Riviera website "An evening stroll along the seafront, under the soft light of the beach front illuminations, is a perfect way to wrap up your day." This is now possible once again.

Summer in Paignton

Over the next 3 months there are many events happening here in Paignton. Carnival, Classic Cars, Steam Rally, Regattas in July and August. In Setember there are the Agatha Christie week and the Comedy film festival. Live music, fairs, fireworks and The Red Arrows never fail to put on a spectacular display over the Bay. Latest News From Paignton

Paignton, Preston and Goodrington are amongst seven beaches in torbay to acheive Blue Flag status.
Torbay's Blue Flag beaches had to pass strict criteria on a number of aspects of beach management including access, facilities on offer, good litter management and bathing water quality.

The Waste Management conference is taking place on Paignton Green for the last time this year. This means that in future years holiday makers will be able to enjoy Paignton for the whole of June.

Despite the gloom of the weather forcasters predicting rain we have enjoyed dry and sunny weather here over the past week so. The weekend of 18th 19th 20th April sees a celebration of 'all things English'. Coinciding with the Queen's Birthday and St. George's Day, the English Riviera Cream Tea Festival sees a number of events around the bay. From croquet to fish and chips and real ale to Morris Dancing, and a Rally of Morris Minor Cars. The same weekend sees 'Heritage Open Days' on the Paignton-Dartmouth Steam Railway. A unique opportunity to visit the locomotive workshops and see behind the scenes in the running of the railway. There will also be vintage bus rides, a steam ploughing engine, vintage cars and much more.

Easter

Easter is now nearly upon us, it's really early this year.
It was bought home to us just how close it is when we went for a stroll the other day. The beach huts are back in their summer positions and the beach kiosks are being set up. Despite the windy weather of the past week or so most businesses in Paignton are spruced up and ready to go.
We still have a couple of rooms available for easter so if you fancy getting away for the weekend, why not contact us.

The Star Grading System

Over the past two years Visit Britain has changed the grading system from one where hotels were rated with stars and guest houses, b&b's as diamonds to one where all accommodation is rated with stars.

Like many other people in the business we believe that this is confusing to everyone and would like to know how much influence the grading system has when you are deciding where to stay.
Also does anyone really understand the system or what different facilities can be expected between the different categories of star rated accommodation (hotels , guest accommodation, guest house b&b etc).

A Stroll along the Seafront

The sunshine and blue skies tempted us out for a walk along the seafront. We took the camera and here are some of the pictures.

Passing the people eating chips or ice creams it was hard to believe that it is still January.

In the garden there are still a lot of the more tender plants continuing to grow and even starting to flower.

But this is what living in "The English Riviera" is all about.

The long range weather forecast for the next 3 months is mainly mild with temperatures above average, rainfall below average and sunshine normal for the time of year.

So if the forecast is accurate, the next few months will be an ideal time to put on the walking boots and get out onto the coast path and the other walks in the area.

New Roof and Fire Alarm

The past couple of months have seen a good deal of upheaval. For about 4 weeks the whole building was surrounded by Scaffolding whilst the roof was replaced. The old one was about 130 years old and on closer inspection in a far worse state than we thought.
Alan, Billl and Joe have done a great job and with the new guttering etc the house looks considerably better.
Following our holiday carpets and floorboards had to be lifted in almost every room in order to fit the new fire alarm system. All work is now complete and we are now back to normal.
